this had the best sense of progression because it's the first time new moves were introduced like paying for swimming to progress to underwater levels, i'll never forget paying for the climbing ability and feeling like a new world was introduced, then of course the headbut into the ground, the little cutscenes at the start / end of every portal, the badlands was genuinely dark and scary lol. Voice actors were so much more interesting, the remaster doesn't compare, the way the audio cuts out to create suspense and they left out the sound when you press X after audio.. hunter also is just lifeless in the remaster lol. I feel like every level in this Spyro game was well thought out whereas in spyro 3 I loved it but it was very random. Even Zephyr with it's weird herding elephant things The only levels I don't remember as well are the last worlds lol (I completed it but probably didn't return to this part when replaying)

I was excited to see Super Mario World released, and the playtesting you could do in stores, but I was intimidated by the sheer amount of secrets that SMB3 had had, and I thought there is no way a newer game, jam packed with even more secrets, could be something I had the time to take on. I was getting more into schooling and personal goals. Now years later and I see Mario World's secrets are largely just alternative paths or maybe a supposedly bonus level that's largely empty or fruitless, switches that only add to the same pathways, I am kinda surprised. It's almost like the only reward for exploring Mario 4 is a faster way to complete the game or more bonus points. Are either of those supposed to be fun? The bowser map is just a bunch of exits to the same few levels? Weird! Why? They were really banking on repetitive replayability. Mario 3 had secret coins/scores to achieve that revealed interactivity, secret ships with secret items, a more dynamic map world with roaming enemies, bonus games, a "secret" bonus game, and levels that you can never come back to, which might have warp whistles or certain suits hidden in them, and an artfully "revealed" complexity over the course of the game. Compared to Mario 3, this "Mario 4" turned out to feel really beautiful and iconic but also a hollow test of endurance like a long echoey hallway. (I love that the reward for winning is you get to take a vacation, one might feel like they need it after such a game!) I see they had a lot of new things introduced that stayed with the franchise forever, like visual checkpoints, yoshi (with a couple pointless extra powers per yoshi type except the apparently invaluable blue yoshi), the spellcasting koopa (apparently Bowser befriended this wizard-turtle after his severe beating in Mario 3), wiggler, some different (if no more creative) dynamics with level interaction, larger variety of behaviors (like ghosts in circles, straight-line ghosts, koopas acting like footballers, koopas getting out of shells, torpedo versions of the bullets, etc.) and more playful ideas of size like giant bullet bills and tiny thwomps, King Boo. But all the expanded world and these dynamics about "increased freedom in play style" don't add up to the meaningful strategy, inventory management, careful world navigation (and bonus games!), or variety of power-up suits of Mario 3. Even the forest of illusion that boasted of "puzzles" feels no more complex than the other levels. I wonder if the developers feel the same way about Mario 4. Beautiful but sparse. Thanks for the playthrough! It was fun to see (and not have to play myself, you are very skilled!).
